DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Laurel and Hardy were one of the most popular comedy teams of the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema. Composed of thin, English-born Stan Laurel (1890--1965) and heavy, American-born Oliver Hardy (1892--1957) they became well known during the late 1920s to the mid-1940s for their work in motion pictures; the team also appeared on stage throughout America and Europe. The two comedians first worked together on the film The Lucky Dog. After a period appearing separately in several short films for the Hal Roach studio during the 1920s, they began appearing in movie shorts together in 1926. Laurel and Hardy officially became a team the following year, and soon became Hal Roach's most lucrative stars. Among their most popular and successful films were the features Sons of the Desert (1933), Way Out West (1937), and Block-Heads (1938) and the shorts Big Business (1929), Liberty (1929), and their Academy Award-winning short, The Music Box (1932). The pair left the Roach studio in 1940, then appeared in eight "B" comedies for 20th Century Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1941 to 1945. Disappointed in the films in which they had little creative control, from 1946 to 1950 the team did not appear on film and concentrated on their stage show, embarking on a musical hall tour of England, Ireland and Scotland. They made Atoll K, a French/Italian co-production and their last film, in 1950/1951, before retiring from the screen. In total <b>...</b>

Ot en Sien-expositie in Roden
RODEN - Havezathe Mensinge in Roden heeft in het kader van Oktobermaand Kindermaand een expositie over Ot en Sien. 105 jaar geleden werden deze kinderfiguren in Roden voor het eerst getekend door Cornelis Jetses. De verhalen zijn geschreven door Hindericus Scheepstra. De eerste serie, getiteld Dicht bij Huis, verscheen in 1902. De tweede serie, getiteld Nog bij Moeder, verscheen in 1904. Scheepstra en Jetses schetsten een uiterst romantisch beeld van het leven in Drenthe. De bevolking in Drenthe woonde omstreeks 1900 voor een groot deel in plaggenhutten en was één der armste in Nederland. Hiervan is in de verhalen van 'Ot en Sien' niets terug te vinden. Tot in de jaren ver na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden de boekjes in het onderwijs gebruikt. Maar ze sloten totaal niet aan bij de leefwereld van de scholieren voor wie ze bestemd waren. Kinderen in de volksbuurten van de grote steden konden zich nauwelijks een voorstelling maken van het dagelijkse huiselijke gezinsleven op het Drentse platteland, of van een gezin met een dienstbode. De expositie in Roden, te zien tot en met 25 oktober, bevat uniek materiaal van Cornelis Jetses, beschikbaar gesteld door Willem en Aaltje Sprik uit Scharnegoutum (Fr). er is een inrichting van een klaslokaal met oude schoolbanken en wandplaten, beschikbaar gesteld door de heer JH Polhuijs uit Spijk. In de Havezate zijn tien poppen te bewonderen, die zijn aangekleed door Willy Luinge met kleding uit vroeger tijden.
